Looking for a book/short story about filial piety

Post by thesassycynic »

I'm writing a paper about filial piety. You can look up the definition on Wikipedia, but basically, filial piety is loving and respecting your parents and ancestors to the point that you do things in order to make them happy. I'm already using two novels I read in class, Hong Kong Rose (which is Korean) and The Namesake (which is Indian), and I'd like to have a third book or short story with an American take on this idea. I have been wracking my brain for all the stories I've ever read, and I can't think of anything! Does anyone out there have any ideas? Stories about someone who disobeys their parents in order to follow their dreams? Or stories about someone who obeys their parents in order to make them happy even if it makes them unhappy? I'd prefer something short because I don't have a lot of time to read another two or three hundred page book.

The only applicable things I can come up with on the spot would be Shakespeare's King Lear or Flannery O'Conner's short story The Lame Shall Enter First. Check out some summaries of those to see if they would work.

There's probably a Canterbury Tale that you could use. Maybe check those out.
