Hemingway Short Stories-- Analysis

Post by trixie »

I am readining Ernest Hemingway's short stories on my own and I know there are so many hidden meanings that I am missing out on. Does anyone know of a good website to analyze Hemingway and/ or other famous literature? (I remember looking for that type of website when I was in high school, but now I just want to do it for pleasure, funny how the tables have turned!)

Thank you!!

I'm not sure about websites (Sparknotes are really kind of useless for anything more than surface-level understanding, and a good deal else you can find on the internet frequently reveals itself to be someone's 10th-grade lit/comp project), but your local librarian can usually steer you to good print commentaries on certain of his stories, or his writing in general.

JSTOR is an internet archive of academic/critical writing, and most college libraries have access to it (or, again, can steer you in the right direction). Your local college/university may access it through an agreement with another university, so don't worry if you can't find a specific school on JSTOR's list: just ask at the library. Actually, college libraries in general are a good bet: certain Hemingway short stories are frequently read at the college level and staff may be well-prepared for inquisitive souls.

Also, trixie, I'm not sure where you are in relation to Boston, but the JFK Library there has the best collection anywhere of works by or pertaining to Hemingway in one location. Take a look around the website--I'm sure there are some resources that'll help you.

The most invaluable resource, however, is someone to read him with you. A reading circle, a class, whatever it takes. Best of luck.

I agree, that there are many hidden things in them. But all of them were explained to me by my teacher of literature.

I don't like Hemingway. I find him pretentious.
