does anyone know this book?

I only know the story but lack info on the Author or the Title.
It goes something like this:
A boy seeks a loan from a bank for his mother's mortgage. He is given a small loan by the banker and told how to make the rest up and sent on a journey. On his way home, the boy runs into a girl he likes but is inturn beaten up by her boyfriend. Somehow he ends up on the East coast only to find the Banker there and he is a lunatic who is running for Office with the help of a Native American. Then, the boy ends up loosing everything, all the money he made and his mother's house.
I believe its a direct comment on Modernity and its effect on the average good-hearted American for during his journey he loses an eye, his teeth and his mother's house, which he oddly finds on display as an antique living quarters.
Interesting book.

Written in early 20th century I believe around 1910. Hope someone knows this book I'm really interested in a re-read. Thanks
