Loking for 2 books

Back several years agor I read 2 books that I would like to recommend to a friend but cannot remember the title or author - Hoping someone from here may know of the 2 I'm talking about.

Book 1 is about a Seminole Indian that travels up to the great lakes and out to the plains and back to Florida - the time from of the trip would be about the time that white man first came to America I forget exactly when in the story but at one point he talks about the strange men that came in the large canoes and brought sickness.

Book 2 takes place in Japan about a policeman that is investigating a murder back in the shogun days but is written in such a way that the average reader wouldn’t realize the time frame until real late in the book.

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated
