family being chased across ice?(SOLVED)

Post by salparadise »

I read a book years ago and I need help finding the title. I remember that it was about a prison escape and a family has to flee across a frozen landscape. They are being pursude by a small group of escapees. Also, the peat moss under the ice is on fire, making it more treacherous for the family. The location was either upper michigan or canada. It was either a prison or a mental institution. I remember that the location was very remote and people and supplies were being flown in. The man of the family was either a pilot or a guard, but I'm leaning toward pilot, He had a wife and young son. This was written in the 1980's or early 90's. It was a very tense book and I would very much like to read it again. If I can find it! Thanks in advance for your help.
