Need helping finding out author and book title.

Hello all. I'm looking to find out the Title and Author of a book.

The story is about a journalist who is allowed to go to a compound and interview the leader. On the condition that he writes a good review. After being there for a week he is just disgusted with what he sees and can't write a good review.

After writing a bad review he gets a call from the leader ,while the cahracter is at the breakfast table with is family, stating that it wasn't wise to do that.

He stops his middle child, Son, from eating his ceral. Cause he remembers at the compound they talk about a posion you wouldn't be able to taste as being their favorite means of killing. Only to see that his infant son is dead in his wifes arms from the bottle she had just given him.

They go on the run. Long story short the wife is shot in the back of the head. The author is graphic. While they try and escape from people chasing them in a mountain abandoned mining town. After the wife is shot it is only him and his daughter. She is getting weak from lack of food and the cold temp in the mountains. She dies. After that he starts to hunt the ones that have been hunting him. He eventually finds out where the compound leaders home is. He is on a hill overlooking the leaders house while they are in the back yard eating lunch. He has a scoped rifle. He is thinking of who he should kill first. The leaders son for his son. Or maybe the leaders daughter. Or the wife. Or maybe the leader so that their is no chance to escape. In the end he ends up doing nothing and walking away not wanting to become what the leader was.

This is a book I read about 4 to 5 years ago. I don't think it was new at that time. The book was red. If anyone has a clue that would be awsome.
