Can't remember the book title, can anyone help?

The book was a national best seller and award winning, but I can't remember the title, the author, and any of the character names!

The basic plot is that there is a city where people live at after they die and remain there until they are forgotten by people still living in our world. The city gets smaller and smaller as people are forgotten and gets down to just one girl who is still actually alive.

Does this ring a bell to anyone?

That almost sounds like the last part of the trilogy His Dark Materials by Philip Pullman...the first book was the Golden Compass. If it is the book you're thinking of the girl's name is Lyra and the book was called The Amber Spyglass.
