That being said the context is a factor in whether it could be considered as rude. For instance, if I was at a family gathering and someone called to say that we are having lunch now, it would actually be rude if I ignored them to continue reading. If in a public place, I think your body language could hint at your approachability. If in the workplace and someone needs to discuss work-related things - that would be understandable. Perhaps choosing where you read is a factor too
