No. I like to focus on writing only. Even if there is music, I will not be aware of it.

I like to be in a quiet room with my book, that way all my concentration is on reading:)

I hardly ever listen to music when I read. Multitasking is highly overrated.

Suddenly, I'm able to. Isn't that a surprise... for me... and a great one?! I still find silence necessary sometimes, but lately I've been writing to German lieder and Russian songs for operatic voice and piano. Symphony and concerti have been nice writer's listening for me, too, especially Tchaikovsky's and Prokofiev's. J.K. Rowling wrote the first Harry Potter book while listening to Tchaikovsky's violin concerto, I found out. Interesting. My favorite works of his to write to are his fourth symphony, Piano Concerto No. 1, and Souvenir de Florence, which was originally written for six strings, but which I enjoy most as it's played by the Orchestra Conrad von der Goltz. Tchaikovsky's name is synonymous with melodic mastery.
Those who dream by day are cognizant of many things that escape those who only dream at night.

Depends a bit on the book. I find it more enjoyable to read things like 'Elric of Melnibone' whilst listening to Pink Floyd etc. And Stephen King books often go better with a bit of old style rock and roll in the background.

I wish I was one of those people that could read and have music playing in the background, but I can't. I find it to be too distracting. However, I find it easier to write if I have music playing in the background. Weird how that works!

Along with reading, music is another one of my semi addictions. I love to have background music on while I'm reading but if its a really good book then I like to read in silence. All depends on my mood and the book.

When I have a disturbance or the silence gets to deafening then I usually just pluck in my headphones. But other than, I welcome silence with open arms.

I prefer to read in silence. If I listen to music I get too distracted.

Definitely not for me! I like to read in silence. I find external noise distracting, as I like to be absorbed in what I'm reading, as if I'm a character in the story! :-)

I tend to listen to music while I do a lot of things, reading being one of those things. At the same time, what I listen to depends on what I'm reading.

Do you know that it is encouraged, by some educators, to play classical music in the classroom while children are working. Of course that music is more so classical, than anything else. As you've guessed it, it's for the stimulating of the mind. It can probably assist in their retention of what they're reading.

I am not handicapped without music, when I read though. Some books are intense enough without, what would feel like, outside noise.

If the book is totally engrossing there can be background music, but if it's a book I need to concentrate on because of the language spoken or how technical it is I need silence which is usually why I go hide to read.

I used to listen to music while I read, but I don't so much anymore. I read a lot when there is nothing on TV, and I have my TV on in the background, so I have some sort of noise, but it usually isn't music anymore. I just get so lost in my book that what noise there is doesn't even matter because I am too focused on my book to hear it! So, I figured why not just read without music because it doesn't really do anything the TV noise in the background can't do. But, I used to--and I still do sometimes--and when I do it isn't any specific genre of music. I just put my iPod on shuffle and read away!

I've never tried listening to music whilst I read. But I don't think that it would matter if I played any or not. That's only because when I read, I usually block everything else out. I immerse myself into the story, and so I become completely oblivious to my surroundings. Of course this annoys my mum, when she is calling my and I am too much into the story that I don't even hear her!
