I started school aged 4 and discovered "The cat sat on the mat" and that was that. Comics first, then, "Little women", "What Katy Did", "Jennings and Derbyshire", Malory Towers" etc. At secondary school we had a terrific library and very good literature teachers. Now, nearing old age, I'm still obsessed with books. All my family are the same - when we meet the first question is - what are you reading?

No, at first I was a listener. My mom was reading, and I was listening :) But as soon as I learned to read I almost always have a book that I am currently reading.

When I was younger, I was always ahead of my class when it came to reading level, but I never really read for fun. It wasn't until high school that I really fell in love with reading. After I read 'To Kill a Mockingbird' and '1984' I fell in love. I could not stop reading. I read anything I could, and every time my english teachers mentioned a book offhand that we weren't reading in class, I'd have that book by the next day and have it read by the next week. Reading has become extremely important to me, and I don't know who I'd be if I never started reading.

I have always been an avid reader. I did not have an easy childhood, and books were my great escape. There was a small library on the corner of my street, and in the summer I would check out four books - the maximum a person could take out. My girlfriend and I would ride our bikes to a park where we would read all day.Ever since, I have read as much as I can

Almost always a reader, going back to comic book days in the late 70s. From there I progressed to science fiction and science, adding a bit of capital L literature over the years. Since I have returned to mainly science fiction and fantasy.

I've always loved to read. My parents read to me when I was young and I taught myself to read when I was five. Reading is my way to relax and escape to different worlds.

I remember being really young and reading all the time (I was also an only child so that could of had a lot to do with it). I received the Harry Potter books at a young age and must have read them a half a dozen times. Over the years it was impossible to contain my "bookshelf" my closet didn't have clothes it was a huge walk in bookshelf. It took me until just last Christmas to finally cave and get an e-reader because I was so obsessed with the feel and the smell of books. But now I'm very happy having good an e-reader. I have it connected to my local livrary so when the one book is finished in the middle of the night I move on to the next one. Plus I don't have to worry about keeping my husband up all night with the lamp ? So YES ... I was born a reader!

Hard to say, as a child I'd always collect whatever books I could from the library, but that was more for the look of the book. I never read as much as I had, but as time went on I actually made an effort to read through what I could. Both for praise and what enjoyment I got from reading. It wasn't until early on in high school when my enthusiasm was matched and expressed by one of my favorite teachers. They put into words what I couldn't find when it came to loving books, as well as a new insight that comes with going deeper beyond what was written on a page. After that I gained a renewed (or strengthened ) love for reading. Hasnt stopped since.
So I guess while books have always had a presence in my life, I didn't become a "reader" till high school.

When I just started reading, I hated it, because I was not fluent in it. It took some time and lots of tears for me to get proficient in reading. At the same time I got tired of the neighborhood girls who were always feuding with each other for no reason at all. That is when I started to browse in all the books we had in the house and discovered all kinds of adventures written in the books. Since then I found myself reading all the time when not in school or doing household chores. I sometimes even told my parents that I needed to study for tests when a book was more interesting than going out to family occasions.

What is it that suddenly makes somewhat love reading? Many responders have said they didn't begin to enjoy reading until high school or adulthood. Similarly, what makes someone suddenly dislike reading? Again, many people claim to have loved reading until they were introduced to chapter books.

Myself, I have always loved reading. I even studied literature and am English teacher so I could always do what I love. I believe literacy is the most powerful tool, and its mastery offers limitless opportunities to learn. Just generalized reading opens doors to the humanities, promotes inquiry and critical analysis, and gives a larger vocabulary to confuse friends, To me, literature is the epitome of culture that creates relationships with characters, authors, and other readers.

Why wouldn't we want to be a part of that human story?

I remember loving when my mother read to me when I was little, and eventually I phased to reading on my own. I have always enjoyed reading what I wanted to read, and I hope I never lose that.

I have memories of reading as young as 5. I would sit for hours and hours just reading anything I get can my hands on. As I have gotten older, and was in college it was harder to find the time and then I had the worlds craziest job, but last year I made the time and read more books than I have in a while. I am moving slow this year but I have plans to read more!

I was definitely always a reader. I can still remember reading as a child and not fully understanding why everyone around me was so happy that I thoroughly enjoyed it. So thankful my mother read to me as a child.
