Re: Book you never finished

The second book in The Hunger Games trilogy. It's funny, I always finish books I wind up disliking, thinking maybe it'll get better (but it usually doesn't) and then the books I don't finish are usually because I put them down and pick up another, before returning to them again. What's the second one called, Mockingjay? Yeah, I read the first book (which was hard because I despised Peeta) and only made it halfway through the second. I never finished it and never read the third, which I hear was awful anyways.

I never finished The Lord of the Flies. It was a required book for me to read at school. It has good meanings and all but I thought the book was a little boring.

I never finished Stephen King’s Misery. When the main character had to do the unthinkable to survive, I stopped reading the book. I knew at that moment his ordeal was only going to get worse and I didn't want to be a witness to his suffering.

I enjoy the movies made from Stephen King, but I have tried to read The Stand, The Shinning, and The Green Mile. I can't get even 20 pages is before I am bored.

Some old books. Balzak, for instance. Gone with the wind, Jane Eyre, that kind of things. It's just not for me.

Howards End by E.M. Forster. I am a reader who perseveres but unfortunately I found this novel simply boring. I didn't think it was badly written, I didn't dislike the story and I would have like to have found it interesting, but I couldn't continue beyond about a third of the way in. I forget the details now, but there was nothing to recommend it.

Since then, I have read and enjoyed immensely his A Room with a View and A Passage to India. I especially like the way that, in amongst some great social critique, he wallows in a purple passage of descriptive writing. Forster has many recommendations, but as a user of language he is supreme. Still, Howards End didn't do it for me. Perhaps it's time to revisit it.
