No, I don't like to. Some books are so stiff that you have to though :(
I will disown a friend who ruined one of my books... so disrespectful! ... maybe not disown, but i would be really annoyed :)

If it's a paperback yes, after all it's just a paperback. I try not to be too rough with them only because I dislike having the pages come loose from the spine. It's only a paperback though, not a big deal. My hard covers I take good care of. And I only buy them when I really, really, really like the book.

I never loan books. If I let you walk out the door with one I've already given it to you. Every time I loaned a book I didn't get it back.

First time this has happened: I just finished a book that was so good I was compelled to give it to a friend so she could enjoy it too. Never done that before. Of course I already decided to buy a hardcover copy anyway but still....

I try to avoid doing this at all costs. I like to keep my books in good condition. Bending the spine too much can damage the book.

When I was in high school, I was reading a novel and my friend picked it up to look at it. She had this habit of treating books harshly and true to my word, first thing she did was forcefully bend the spine. It was bent so badly the books always falls open to the page where she bent it.

...however I do crack spines of hardbacks since they're usually bound pretty well. I always take hardbacks with me to the gym too, since they stay open on their own better. I crack them to stay open. :!:

You know, the point is to read the book. Not keep it in perfect condition. No reason to be rough with it but at the same time there's no reason to treat it like it's going to break either. Just a little reminder.

Books that I enjoy I like to keep. As I am not rich, it is important that I try to keep whatever I value in as good condition as possible. I don't always have the money to buy new ones. Waste not, want not, as the saying going. Just a little reminder.

I don't crack the spines on purpose, but some of mine are cracked. I buy used books often and I say the more tattered, the better! That means it must be a good book. As long as the words are all there and legible, I love the look of many-times-read books.

cracking a book spine shows that the person has no real love for books.

I never, never, never crack the spine. In fact I once lent a friend a book and it came back with the spine cracked really badly. I did not speak to her for weeks and I have never lent her a book again. :D
