Mostly, to learn about myself and about other people. I also like to perceive things from a different view.

I love escaping to a new place and getting to know people intimately, maybe more intimately than is possible in real life.

Reading is like living many lives. Each novel is a different life in a different place, different time, with new people to meet, new emotions to experience.

Since I was much younger books have taken me to places and times that short of time travel I can't reach otherwise. They tell stories about people that lived and made a difference during their times and for future generations. It is almost like you learn who they were (although in numerous viewpoints). I also like to read because books can take me away from the tough times we live in today.

And then there is the fact that reading is just enjoyable!!! I like to read almost every type of literature, with the exception of bodice rippers. I know that for some these are the greatest books and the authors are their favorite people in the world. Just seems the plots are all the same. But that is me. We are lucky in this country that we can read whatever we want; not everyone around the world is so fortunate.

The only difficulty in reading about the past is that we all see how the mistakes are repeated over and over again, but we are helpless to do anything about it. So in between reading on these very serious topics, I like to read more current fiction, especially books that make me laugh!!!

And I want to thank all of you for making some great suggestions. It is nice to belong to a forum where there are so many people who really enjoy reading!!!

i enjoy reading because it keeps the brain stimulated and sharp! also, there is never anything entertaining on tv . when reading the imagination runs loose and creates your own movie in your mind the way you want it to be with characters being the way you want them along with the scenery

Yes, that is when imagination can have free reign. I so agree about television. It seemed it was better when there were only like six or seven channels. Although I would miss PBS if we went back to only those few options. (And I also like the channels that have the older movies and the one that shows old westerns.)

It is so sad what the current programming says about what Americans are now. After all these shows would not be on if they were disliked or unwatched. But luckily we have books that we can read and avoid all this. For me what television should be is more like what we see in books. There is a topic that asks us which books we would like to see made into movies. There are so many suggestions, and not all can be made into movie productions out of Hollywood. So for me television would be best if these books we love would be made into movies so we could watch them.

Sadly, that is not what is most popular right now. When I see programs that do this, such as those on PBS, I usually watch.

I love to read and there are many very simple reasons why. I love to see different events and situations from different perspectives. I love to live through the characters and attempt to imagine myself doing all the things that they do. I love not having a tv and being able to read 'for fun' and as well for academic reasons and enjoying both of those exercises. I love to read for the simple act of reading, I've been hooked on the written word for so long now I just can't imagine not doing it or not loving it.

I have a friend who never reads. I asked him "why not?" and his reply was "If its any good they will make a movie".

I have never been offended quite so much over one man's opinion in my life. Like films and "movies" there is that form of escapism, but books add so much more. You are not watching events occur you are living them with the characters. You know what people are thinking, what motivates them, why they do what they do. I have never read a book with the same regurgitated crap that movies continuously reuse. Good guy gets the girl, etc...

And back to my friends ridiculous statement. Ever noticed how a film adaptation of a book usually does well, and also how it is still nothing compared to the book?

Rant over.

Agree with you, churinga but at least a movie adaptation does lead some to read the full book ... e.g Shutter Island, loads of people have now read the book because of the movie.

Reading is something interesting and fun wherein you can indulge yourself by getting bored.

I heard a lady this week say she reads because she is currently undergoing chemo & the last thing she wants to do is have to engage in conversations with other patients about treatments & symptom comparisons etc She finds having her book with her allows her to retreat into the world of the book while her treatment is going on.

Fran, I am not a very patient person and I hate to wait. But that has pretty much become our lives. So I read in all sorts of lines and waiting rooms. Makes the time pass. I also read on airplanes for the same reason that your friend reads during chemo. Don't want to talk to my fellow passengers. (Every once in awhile I am lucky enough to sit next to someone who is interesting, at least to me, and we have a nice conversation, but rare!!) Does make the time go by, but it also a way to enjoy what would not be that enjoyable.

I cannot imagine what it would be like if I could not read. I have been thrilled with books since I was about 2 years old. But I really only have one friend that reads at all (except ads and newspapers) so I really enjoy "talking" with others that love reading as much as I do. And I really enjoy the suggestions!!!!
