The distractions get me too.

When I read I just read and I have no idea what is happening around me so the idea of listening to music while reading never interested me.

I can't stand music while reading, unless I'm reading a manga. Otherwise I need complete silence, or the sound of everyday life outside my window.

Sometimes. It just depends on my mood and whether or not I'm trying to tune out ambient noise. I especially love it when a book mentions specific music or comes with a printed playlist!

It's nice sometimes to have music. Sometimes silence is more distracting to me than some instrumental music.
If I am listening to music while reading it must be without lyrics because the words of the song distract me from the words from the book.
I can read if there are lyrics but then the music has to be turned almost all the way down.

It's like asking if you listen to music when you watch a movie.
Music takes your mood and imagination in any direction; and when it does you are lost in thought or viewing some mental pictures... Hard to read if reading gets same effect! When reading a book if you are really into it, you hear the dialogues, picture the character, get all tense if the action is high.. one would need a music that will follow all those changes and moods like the music that always goes along with movies..

While I'm reading, I can deal with it - but it has to be music that isn't too distracting (instrumental, or softer things)

It honestly depends. Mostly, I can't focus completely on a book and listen to music.

If the book has a complicated story, like a mystery with lots of twists and turns, music can be distracting. Otherwise I like classical or ambient music.

I find it distracting most times. When I am studying for school or working, I like noise in the background. But when I am reading for leisure, I like it perfectly quiet because I often like to read aloud.

No it distracts me too much. I prefer to read in silence. The story comes alive for me when it's quiet around.
