One of the reasons I love to read is because I love to learn. I've been really interested in WWII books lately, specifically about concentration camps.
Another reason I love to read is because depending on my mood I can be transported to a funny book, a romance, or a memoir that breaks my heart. I'm a lover of all kinds of different books. Some days I feel like reading a far fetched chick lit romance, other days I feel like reading a serious non-fiction historical book.
I'm excited to be a new member of the group and I look forward to learning about books that I need to add to my "to read" list!

Yes, reading is wonderful. I would read all day every day if I could. It is always being transported so one is not really in the same place all the time. I am told that I must get out more and be more sociable; that I spend too much time reading!!! I think I am full of socializing from before I retired; cocktail parties, fundraisers, and other types of do's where there were people I did not know, did not want to be with and where the conversations were stullifyingly boring, but I had to pretend an interest!!!! (I think my friends mean socializing in a much more positive way!!!)letigre2393 wrote:I love reading for many different reasons. One, as many have stated before me, reading is a wonderful way to escape from reality. When I'm just having a terrible day, I love that I can just pick up a book and be instantly transported to a different place surrounded by different people and their trials and triumphs. Sometimes it's easier to experience someone else's problems, if only for a short while, to gain perspective and see your life through another's eyes. When I really become absorbed in a book, I get to meet people I wouldn't otherwise come in contact with. I get to experience what makes other people who they are.... reading is just plain fun. Some people entertain themselves with television, computer, and video games. I happen to enjoy a good book.
So as not to be obsessive about it, I have taken up other hobbies that take me out of the house (or out of the library). But there are always several books waiting for me to get back to. After all this was one of the things I looked forward to most when I was planning my retirement!!!

You say you are retired so I presume you have reached that golden age where what anyone thinks of you is of zero concern to you. So enjoy your reading and let the cocktail set do their cocktailing elsewhere.

Anyway your socialising with us here on the forums aren't you? See you in the Online Pub and/or The Smugglers

When I was in career mode I wore tailored suits, great shoes and carried great gigantic purses (I still like great purses) with all the coordinated accessories, including jewelry. I spent a huge amount on makeup and nail color. I was a very serious about fashion. I loved to shop at almost any grand department store you could imagine. (I am sure some went out of business as I and my friends stopped shopping!) I had several closets full and just continued to accumulate. In other words, I was obsessed!!!
So now I run around in sweats, yoga pants, plaid shirts and sports shoes. Yes, they still more or less match a certain color scheme and are clean. Not too many holes. But they do not get pressed. No more ironing!!! No makeup at all. Rarely a dress or skirt. I donated closets full of clothes to organizations that provide women with clothes for job interviews. I don't envy them in this job market and I hope the clothes give them confidence. They are sure being put to better use than sitting in my closets.
There is no time for all that now. I need to concentrate on relaxing and reading!!!!

1) It serves as an escape from all the stress in life.
2) There is always something to learn about.
3) Reading always gives you something new to talk about with people.
4) I feel like I have made a new friend(s).
