Reading is an escape. A good book takes you out of the daily grind and into another world. And sometimes the way a character handles their difficulty helps me to deal with something in my life. I tend to prefer books over movies because with a book I can let my mind paint the scene rather than have it pasted on a screen.

I like to read for various reasons. First off, it doesn't tire me greatly like many other things do. I don't have much energy, so this is important to me. Secondly, I love to escape into other people's stories and other worlds. I can forget about my own problems. Sometimes a book teaches me something, that I can use in my life. Or I can read a book written in a specific time period and it tells you something about how the people lived their lives back then. So sometimes it's educational, often it's just entertainment. A book can make me happy or sad. I also like that with a book you can use your own imagination of how things look. I'm sure there are more reasons why I read but these are the main ones.

I love reading for many different reasons. One, as many have stated before me, reading is a wonderful way to escape from reality. When I'm just having a terrible day, I love that I can just pick up a book and be instantly transported to a different place surrounded by different people and their trials and triumphs. Sometimes it's easier to experience someone else's problems, if only for a short while, to gain perspective and see your life through another's eyes. Two, out has long been my dream to travel the world. To experience different people and places and lifestyles. I come from a very conservative community. No one leaves their hometown or even briefly considers that maybe, just maybe, being different to everyone rise isn't evil, but a part of what makes humans so beautiful. When I really become absorbed in a book, I get to meet people I wouldn't otherwise come in contact with. I get to experience what makes other people who they are. I get to explore foreign countries I've only ever dreamed of. Reading is a great way to see things through another's eyes, to experience things I didn't even know to dream of. A way to find out who I was, who I am, and also who I will be. Third, reading is just plain fun. Some people entertain themselves with television, computer, and video games. I happen to enjoy a good book.

I've loved reading since I learned to read! I remember participating in the summer reading program at the library as a kid and I'd read more books than most of the other kids.

One of the reasons I love to read is because I love to learn. I've been really interested in WWII books lately, specifically about concentration camps.

Another reason I love to read is because depending on my mood I can be transported to a funny book, a romance, or a memoir that breaks my heart. I'm a lover of all kinds of different books. Some days I feel like reading a far fetched chick lit romance, other days I feel like reading a serious non-fiction historical book.

I'm excited to be a new member of the group and I look forward to learning about books that I need to add to my "to read" list!

Yes, reading is wonderful. I would read all day every day if I could. It is always being transported so one is not really in the same place all the time. I am told that I must get out more and be more sociable; that I spend too much time reading!!! I think I am full of socializing from before I retired; cocktail parties, fundraisers, and other types of do's where there were people I did not know, did not want to be with and where the conversations were stullifyingly boring, but I had to pretend an interest!!!! (I think my friends mean socializing in a much more positive way!!!)

So as not to be obsessive about it, I have taken up other hobbies that take me out of the house (or out of the library). But there are always several books waiting for me to get back to. After all this was one of the things I looked forward to most when I was planning my retirement!!!

@MysFan
You say you are retired so I presume you have reached that golden age where what anyone thinks of you is of zero concern to you. So enjoy your reading and let the cocktail set do their cocktailing elsewhere.
Anyway your socialising with us here on the forums aren't you? See you in the Online Pub and/or The Smugglers

Fran, what a great approach!!! These are examples of socializing!!!

When I was in career mode I wore tailored suits, great shoes and carried great gigantic purses (I still like great purses) with all the coordinated accessories, including jewelry. I spent a huge amount on makeup and nail color. I was a very serious about fashion. I loved to shop at almost any grand department store you could imagine. (I am sure some went out of business as I and my friends stopped shopping!) I had several closets full and just continued to accumulate. In other words, I was obsessed!!!

So now I run around in sweats, yoga pants, plaid shirts and sports shoes. Yes, they still more or less match a certain color scheme and are clean. Not too many holes. But they do not get pressed. No more ironing!!! No makeup at all. Rarely a dress or skirt. I donated closets full of clothes to organizations that provide women with clothes for job interviews. I don't envy them in this job market and I hope the clothes give them confidence. They are sure being put to better use than sitting in my closets.

There is no time for all that now. I need to concentrate on relaxing and reading!!!!

The one and only reason to like reading is to increase the knowledge and reading skills.

I like reading because it forces me to put myself in someone elses shoes. Reading also provokes thinking and imagination. Last of all, reading allows you to get away from your day-to-day stresses and worries.

I like reading because it lets me travel to different places that I have never been. Another reason is because it helps me figure out my problems that I have at that moment. Reading helps me relax when I have to much on my mind and I need it to calm down.

In my case, I love reading because It helps me stop thinking about bad things. Like when I'm upset, I grab a book and that just makes me forget about everything. It is a way of escaping reality. Also we learn a lot of facts by reading...
It ncreases our knowledge level.. :)

This is a hard question to answer really. I guess I love reading because it is an escape. I can go somewhere and live a different life through books. I like to put myself in the shoes of the main character and experience their life, be it scary or boring ( at least to them). Reading also expands your mind... learn new words, "see" new places, and "meet" new people.
