Re: Do you listen to music while you read?

Post by hermione3280 »

I listen to music all the time when I read because when I was a teenager and listening to music all the time my dad's stipulation was you must do something while you listen, so I took up reading, and never stopped. Now it's hard for me to read/study without music on in the background.

I wish I could, since music benefits most other activities I do. Total silence is a necessity for me, unfortunately. I have to be 100% focused on the book I'm reading or else all hope is lost in trying to comprehend the last sentence I just read.

Still can't concentrate. But I think I am going to listen to music while I take a shower.

I do not listen to music when I read, nor can I fathom how anyone can. My concentration is fixed upon what I am reading and distractions tend to interfere with my ability to focus. I have always been like that and probably always will be. I wish it were otherwise, not so I could listen to music, but rather so I could read anywhere and at any time.

I don't intentionally put on music but I often read in the same room that my significant other is watching TV or listening to music or whatever. I also read in public places with stuff happening around me. That is dangerous because if the book is good, especially if I'm reading it for the first time, I tend to focus down on it so completely that I lose track of external sounds and my surroundings. I have missed trains and buses (though luckily not yet a flight). People around me think I'm ignoring them when I honestly didn't hear or notice them at all.

The only time I listen to music when I read is if I am reading something dense and academic, in which case I often like to have classical on in the background. I always played classical music when studying in college as I find it helps me stay focused and engaged.

I listen to music only if I intentionally put it on, but sometimes I leave it on for background noise. Otherwise, I just leave it off.

I can't. I have to be in total silence to focus. I love reading but if the book is not compelling enough, any minimal distractions make it really hard for me to get though it.

I used to listen to classical piano or guitar when I read. Lately I read in silence unless I start laughing about something I am reading.

It's very hard for me to read with music on. When I was little, I read on the bus everyday for years but I still can't figure out how to drown out that annoying background noise. I can handle rain sounds on low in the background, though. which is very soothing for me sometimes.

Having music in the background with lots of guitar chords tends to pull me deeper into a book. Such as listening to Jack White.

I can listen to soft music playing in the background when I am reading sometimes. However, most of the time I prefer it to be very quiet while I am reading. I prefer it this way because I am so easily distracted.
