Short stories aren't exactly en vogue right now, but for me It really does not matter. I think that long series like the Wheel of Time can be daunting because it's thousands of pages, but everything depends on your preferences. I like good writing and plotting. A great short story can pack a punch, while you can literally grow greys while following a long series. Art is art and that's what I appreciate.

It depends on the skill of the writer. Both short stories and complete novels can be amazing. Or they can be dreadful. You shouldn't judge a story by its length.

Well, size actually do matter.
Some books may seem intimidating because of their size even though they are top quality.
