First thing I do is bend the book back and crack the spine as much as I can before I even start reading.
This is a bone of contention with my husband!!!

I definitely would never crack the spine on my book! I feel like that would be a horrible thing to do! lol

The sign of a good book is the binding (not gluing) and if it is "library bound" it will fall open, and stay open, without the need to crack it. Hey, if you purchased the book, you can do with it what you will - but my guess is that sometimes you will loosen the pages!

I do. If the outer cover of the book seems particularly nice, I'll try not to (though it happens), but I prefer to crack for two reason: 1) I prefer to just see one page at a time, and 2) I prefer to not fight the pages wanting to close.

I try not to as broken spines really annoy me

I don't do it on purpose. But if it happens, it's because I read it fully. It's like a badge.

Oh no no no, some of my books are 50+ years old, I want them to survive forever...I would never fold pages or crack the spine intentionally

I do I'm afraid! I find it difficult not to if it's a really thick book; sometimes it bends anyway without me meaning to.

i don't crack the spines on my books. I try to keep them in really good condition in case I want to sell them. I would definitely be upset if I loaned out a book and someone ruined the spine

It depends on the book. If I can avoid it I don't crack the spine, but sometimes I get so involved in the story that it happens and I don't even realize it until I finish reading it.

I'm a bit OCD with these things and try very hard not to. But when I loan them I get them back in a mess! So I don't loan them out any more. Also because I dont get them back!
