I have four children. Two of them really enjoy books and two of them do not. I can't say what the difference is, I am just happy that at least two of them like to read. I still have hope for the other two and try to find books I think will interest them.

I think that if I hadn't been taught to read early I'd by now have learned from somewhere. I just don't know what my life would be without my books...
Those who dream by day are cognizant of many things that escape those who only dream at night.

Yes without a doubt! I'm also going to encourage my child to write as well.

I have three boys (8, 6 and 4). I read a chapter a night to them from book that we pick. I also have a wide selection of books in their room. So far, none of them have an interest in reading on their own but they all love me to read to them. I have hopes! LOL! I usually have them take about 30 min. before bed and tell them to look at their books in bed.

Absolutely! I read to my daughters, who are now adults, and they are both avid readers and excellent writers.

When I have children, I will read books to them. Hopefully, if read to at an early age, they will like reading when they are older. But should they choose not to like reading, I will be disappointed but fine with it.

If anything, I'll read to them and spark their imagination :) Then see where it goes from there! But I'll definitely encourage their love of reading.

I wont force my kids into reading if they do not want to read allot. There is no love for reading if your being forced. If they do choose to read ill buy them any books they want.

I will never force my kids to do anything, but I do plan on reading to them when they're little.

I have children and they have to read at least 30 minutes each day. They can pick their own books, but they must read.

Absolutely. It was how I was raised and for that, I am very thankful. I have loved reading since I was very little. Reading expands your knowledge and imagination...what could be wrong with that?!

I already have a kid and I make it a point to ask him what he read and narrate the story to me. Then i do the same to him. I think it is a great exercise to develop a reading habit, sharpen memory and improve narration skills.

Unless it concerns their health or safety, I don't think "making" a child do anything is the best idea. Children learn from observing and mimicking, so I plan to read around them as much as possible, and hope that sparks their interest. But if my child decides that he/she would prefer to run around outside rather than pick up a novel, I'm okay with that!

I will most likely copy my mothers strategy for getting my future kids to read: It's combination of early bed time stories, easy to read comics, and bribes, I got 20kr, which is about 2 euros, for every textbook I read when I was 7 which was a lot of money back then
