Incessant, unnecessary chatter. Sometimes people talk about the most - to be polite - ridiculous things.

People who can clearly see that you are reading, but insist on having a full-blown conversation with you anyway. These people do not even ask if you want to converse with them. This happens to me all the time when I try to read when I'm on my break at work. I just want to relax with a good book. Is that too much to ask?

And the ones who can see clrearly you are reading but still sit down & proceed to ask you "are you reading" ... I feel like saying no "I'm just airing the book"!
But of course I'm too polite & feel obliged to engage in, what is almost always, a trivial conversation.

Great answers, that you. I agree with all of them so far.

When I'm reading and people insist on not only calling my name but also putting their hand over the page. It's like they think I can't hear just because I'm looking at the book. It drives me nuts.

Here in Chicago, I do most of my reading on the train. Nothing disturbs me more than someone talking loud on their cell phone. For some reason it is more distracting to hear one person talking compared to two.

The "hand over the book" thing is the absolute worse! I also have to agree with people talking on cell phones. I find that very difficult to ignore.
Oh, and my cat deciding she wants to be a bookmark is VERY distracting!

I was watching a show that talked about how the brain functioned in certain situations. It confirmed that it is more distracting to hear one side of a cell phone conversation because your brain is trying to subconsciously fill in the gaps. It is much easier to tune out a regular conversation because your brain is not working as hard.

My dog loves doing that too. Her nose fits perfectly.

People chatting loud on the train, because I've been going on the train a few times the past month, even though they are an inch away from each other.
Also, a crying baby hitting the back of the chair.

When someone (my husband) sees you reading and tries to engage you in conversation about some inane topic (his job) and you try to show them you would rather read by sounding incredibly disinterested and they keep on keeping on. GRRRRR!
