One that I know that I read was David Copperfield. That was so long ago I don't know whether it was the best book over 400 pages or not. I'd be interested to hear what are the nominations for best 400+ page book.

Not sure if this count, but I recently read Catherine the Great by Robert K. Massie, which was some 530 pages long, if I recall, and utterly fascinating. But then again I love Russian history, so it might not be that interesting to others.

All of the books in the Inheritance Cycle by Christopher Paolini are over 500 pages, with the last one being over a 1000.. They are good for fantasy lovers like myself :)

Victor Hugo is one of my favorite "long-book" authors. Both Les Miserables and The Hunchback of Notre Dame are amazing, and I hope to also read The Man Who Laughs over the summer!

The Count of Monte Cristo by Alexandre Dumas. For those who have read the unabridged version, you will know it's a monster of a book but it's completely worth every single page.

The Autobiography of Henry VIII by Margaret George. I loved that book...and it flowed pretty well for being about a thousand pages long.

I really like David Copperfield, but The Count of Monte Cristo is one of my favorite books of all time.

Didn't know the Lord of the Rings counted (being published in three volumes), but it's definitely amazing.

Watership Down was amazing. Can't remember whether it was 400+, but I do remember it was super long, and I also remember thinking that the author couldn't have achieved the same effect with a shorter book.

Ditto regarding Anna Karenina. It was excellent (at least, in the translation that I read), although for giving goosebumps, Watership Down or LOTR is better.

I think a lot of the books I read are over 400 pages. I'd probably say the Night World Series!

Middlemarch is my favourite novel anyway, so wins in this category too. Although, given the thread started with it, David Copperfield runs it (quite) close.
