What would you do if you saw someone writing on a book?

If I saw someone doesn't matter who I will give them a dirty look. I know thats kinda mean but its better than what I really want to do, which is take the book from them wack them up side the head with it and walk away with the book clutched to my chest. Writing on a book feels like vandalizing a piece of art.

I might not like it but if the book is his/her property I would probably just mind my own business.

Well, it depends on what they're writing, which would be hard to find out without making them feel uncomfortable already. If they're writing notes about the book, then I say more power to them! It just means they're enjoying the book and want to remember specific things when they get to that part of the book again, it's no worse than highlighting.

Good point NanoWasabi I make notes too but instead of writing on the book I use sticky notes.

I would let them write away. It's their book - they should be able to enjoy it however they like. There is nothing wrong with writing or highlighting in à book as far as I'm concerned.

Although I would never do it (sticky notes a great idea), live and let live.

If it is their book, it is their business. I myself don't write in books, but to each his own.

I wouldn't do anything assuming the book belongs to them. If it is a library book, I wouldn't like it but still not do anything.

If I knew for sure that it was a library book - or worse yet, my book

- yes, I would say something.
But if it is their own book, then No, of course I would not - it is none of my business.

I would assume that they were a student annotating a text.

As a student whose teachers and professors have at times required that texts be highlighted and annotated, I would feel that it is not my place to judge them. Everyone's situation is different, and you never know why they might be doing that

As long as it's not my book, then I don't care.

It depends what kind of book it was and who owned it! I wouldn't want anyone writing in my books or books belonging to the library but I have written into loads of student text books in my time and appreciated annotations from previous owners!

I would probably:
1. Tell the parent if it was a little kid
2. Explain to them why they should not write on the book
3. Take the book away
4. Ask them to pay for the book and or replace it with a new one
5. Last resort: SCREAM

If they were a student of mine, correct their spelling then ask their parents to pay for a replacement.
