Do you place your books horizontally or vertically on your shelf?

I see people that have their books placed on the shelf horizontally so they have more room for books. I get that but I find it kind of messy so I place mine vertically on my shelf. I find it easier to organize and it doesn't look cluttered.

The books on my shelf are all vertical too. Since the size of the books are the same, I think placing books horizontally doesn't create more space for books. However, since I haven't tried it before, I can't say for sure.

I place them vertically as well.

Ours are placed vertically. Sometimes we even place them in alphabetical order or by genre.

Vertically. Each shelf has a different genre, those are organized alphabetically.

I prefer to put them vertically, and have them be color coded. It just looks nice .

I have both, pne shelf is for my smaller paperbacks and I have so many they have to be horizontal. Then I have my taller paperbacks on the next shelf and they are vertical with the extras horizontal on top. Then my hard covers are all vertical since I dont have too many.

Vertically, but with a few placed horizontally to serve as bookends. I wish I had bookends....

I have mine all vertically, organized alphabetically by author. It looks better to me to have them vertically.

I place my books vertically, because I find it neater that way. Also, its easier when deciding what book I want to read.

Most of mine are placed horizontal, just a few vertical. I'm surprised to read many people in this thread so far have placed theirs in a vertical position. Interesting.

Why horizontally? Does it really save space, or is there some other reason?

Mine are all vertical and then organised into alphabetical by author
