Looking for something different

Post by claireyfairy »

Hi all,

Ive have only just found this forum. I have always loved reading but kinda stopped for a while and only just got back into it over the last few years where I have mainly just been reading chick lit as its easy to read and good to chill out with but im starting to feel like they are all pretty much the same now and feel like I need something a bit more challenging but again something easy to read any recommendations for a new type of genre....

[Moderation Note: Thread moved to general section because new threads in the "Reviews, Recommendations and Warnings" section must be limited to one book or series per thread. All others must be posted in the sticky thread for that genre or in a different section. Please see the new forum rules for the recommendations section. Thank you. -Scott]

I don't mean this to sound like an ad for my blog, but if you check it out you'll find a number of possibilities from authors you've never heard of. Just click on my signature line if you're interested.

As far as better known authors:
John Saul is "easy to read" psychological horror.
Harlan Coben and Tess Gerritsen for mysteries.
Jasper Fforde and Gregory Maguire if you're looking for fantasy-like fiction. They both expand on Fairy-Tale, Nursery Rhyme and Literature characters.

Well , if you want challenging - why not try David Ickes books.

All about the illuminati and reptilians in real like.

Try.

And the truth shall set you free! That will be challenging.

best

"The Ultimate Psycho" by Seth Krueger is the most different and shocking novel on the market now. It is about a cocaine-addicted Massachusetts State Trooper by day who is also a serial killer. He claims to be "The ultimate serial killer of all time!" Unlike "weaker" serial killers, the "Ultimate Psycho" never sneaks up on his victims and never uses weapons. He faces his victims face-to-face challenging, "I'm going to kill you with my bare hands! Try and stop me!" Unlike most serial killers who prey on weak teenage girls, the "Ultimate Psycho" attacks former Special Forces soldiers, Karate champions, Professional Fighters, Mobsters, Cops, and any others who claim to be "tough." "The Ultimate Psycho" is superior to Hannibal Lector, Michael Myers, Jason Vorhees, Ted Bundy, Charles Manson, and Jeffery Dahmer combined!

How different do you want to go?

Water For Elephants by Sarah Gruen is good and a pretty easy read and there is romance.

The Crown Conspiracy by Michael J. Sullivan great and a real easy read, fast-paced adventure, but there isn't much romance.

The Road by Cormac McCarthy is an insanely easy read, but I can't recommend it.

I just finished this and was going to suggest it for its unique plot. It's sort of hard to explain so check it out on amazon. Definitely different. I would say it's a bit to wordy though... I love reading and and so I've mastered the art of speed reading. I found myself skimming through a LOT of this book... but still very good!

I'm pretty much legally obligated to recommend Christopher Moore. It doesn't matter which book (though I suggest 'Fluke, or I Know Why the Winged Whale Sings' and 'Lamb: The Gospel According to Biff, Christ's Childhood Pal'). Moore is hilarious and knows how to balance the absurd and humorous with the dramatic while telling interesting stories.

I recommend Dirklus as something different by Ahsumma Beach.

It is a romantic farce. Officially its Fantasy / Romance, but the love story is odd and the comedy is laugh-out-loud-and-cough funny.

grab it off tower books or amazon.

If you are looking for soemthing "different", I would suggest Neil gaiman.

In particular i would suggest American Gods by him - it is like nothing you have read before.

Chuck Palahniuk and Tom Robbins are two authors who immediately jump to mind if you're looking for fiction that reads like nothing else you've ever encountered between the pages of a book.
