What is the first book you read that made you want to become "a reader"

Post by MnRen91 »

Growing up I was a very fast reader and would always be picking up a new book just to add to the quantity of my reading list. When I was young, prior to middle school, it was mostly about reading as many books as I could to get points from my teachers that could be cashed in for prizes.

When I was in 6th grade I picked up The Giver by Lois Lowry. As I was reading it I felt so many emotions and started to really form my own view on some pretty serious topics. It was the first time I really wanted to sit down with other people and discuss the feelings and thoughts I had while reading the book. When I think back I feel like that was the first time I read a book and wanted to read more books to see what other thoughts and emotions they could evoke.

20 years later I still remember the way I felt reading that book for the first time. I am curious if anyone else can pin point the book that catapulted them into the wonderful world of reading.

The Famous Five collection. I read it when I was a child and I used to discuss the books with my parents and my sister. It encouraged me to read, and to enjoy talking about books. After that, summers became I time when we always used to have at least a book we all read and talked about it (Harry Potter used to be a good option).

I don't remember the first book I read, it's just something that I've always done. I was read to from an early age and could read my own books from the age of 3. Books are a window on the world and reading is the key to an amazing universe.

I thhink Chimamanda Adichie's Purple Hibiscus does it for me. It was a very real story and I could rellate to many things she said in the book. It was a lovely read.

I remember my mom reading me the story of Pinocchio when I was 6 and being surprised that a book with no pictures could have such an interesting story. I was then set on learning how to read so I could get more interesting stories

I can‘t remember a timer where I wasn‘t a reader. I actually started writing short stories before I went to school, so I guess I‘ve always known I love books.
My parents have been reading to me since I was a baby, and the first book of which I know that I consciously listened to it was Astrid Lindgren‘s Pippi Longstocking. My dad read it to me when I was about a year old and Someone in the book asked another character their name and I answered because I thought my dad had asked me my name xD.
I don’t recall which was the first book I ever read on my own, I only know that I devoured lots and lots of books all through elementary school and have never stopped since ;).

I don't remember, my mom used to buy a book every time a classmate had their birthday coming up, and the deal was that I had until the classmate's birthday to finish reading the book because it would be the birthday present; otherwise, the book would stay at home. I did my best every time, and I never got to keep one of those books. This was during grade school.
