Do you prefer reading books that could help you escape your reality or help you understand it?

Whether a book will help me escape reality or aid in understanding it is a question I've never asked myself when I pick books.

But in retrospect, I realize that several books I have read do both. One book that particularly stands out is "Train to Pakistan." The book literally transported me back to the past and helped me understand the Partition of India better.

I don’t know. I think escaping is usually my reason for loving the sort of fiction that I love so much, but I also enjoy relating to the characters. Maybe I like books that can help me understand my reality through unrealistic stories.
