Review - or re-write?

Hi everyone!

Beaming in from New Zealand! :D

I have a question - what happens if you get to page 2 of a book and you've found 10 mistakes already, and unfortunately it seems that English isn't the author's first language?

I don't know whether I'm allowed to name the book from the review list. I chose not to finish the book because it didn't make sense and there were issues with first and third person, present and past tense, speech marks, question marks...that was just in the first two pages.

So when you get a book like that...do you still write a full review and list every error you found? This is only the second book I've reviewed on here so I'm not sure what the process is. I didn't want to do a full re-write for them for $5...but I feel bad for not continuing?

Thanks in advance, I'd love to know your thoughts :)

If you refuse to continue with the review of the book, you get an incomplete. Which is fine. You can then go on and select another book. It is very difficult to review a book that has numerous errors. You only need to take note of the first 10 errors. I have reviewed several of these books and it takes twice as long to read them as you are trying to figure out what you just read. I then state in the review that the book had so many errors that I took off two points from the final score. I don't understand why an author would put through a book that is not ready to be read. It is sloppy and lazy to put it out there, plus goes against there reputation as an author.

Thank you so much for replying, it's great to know the process :) I'll finish reading next time and follow what you do!

You only have to list the first ten errors you find. After that, you don’t have to write them down anymore. That does sound really annoying though. The first book I reviewed here had a lot of mistakes but it doesn’t sound like the problems were nearly as bad as in the book your reading.

LOL I wish I'd asked before I clicked that I couldn't read it anymore 🙃 Yeah...I don't actually know how it was submitted, I assumed the books would be skim read or something before we got to them. Oh well, a learning curve for me! Almost every sentence had an error or made no sense, so I basically had to stop after a page, it was impossible to read.

Usually, when we read the first ten pages of a book, we can tell whether it has a lot of errors or not. If the book is full of mistakes, it becomes really difficult to continue, and most people lose interest and set it aside.
