What’s a book you read that just didn’t live up to its hype?

Especially with “BookTok” these days so many books get talked about and some get talked about and pushed everywhere, but sometimes they just aren’t that good to you. For me there are 2 that I saw (and still see) raving reviews for that I simply just do not understand the hype, The House Across the Lake by Riley Sager and The Last Thing He Told Me by Laura Dave.

I almost feel guilty I didn’t enjoy them when people rave about that, but they just were NOT for me. So I’m curious if that ever happens to anyone else?

I totally get where you're coming from. For me, it was The Midnight Library by Matt Haig. Everyone was raving about how profound and life-changing it was, but it just didn’t resonate with me the way I hoped. I found the themes a bit repetitive and the narrative predictable. It’s always a strange feeling when a massively popular book just doesn’t click personally. Glad I’m not the only one!

This is good to know! That's on my TBR list. There haven't been many books I've felt like that about recently, but one in particular for me was The Midnight Feast by Lucy Foley. I had been so eager to read the book and when I finally did, I was unimpressed. I didn't like any of the characters and couldn't get into the plot. It's very strange to see the book around and think about how much it wasn't a good match for me, but to have it be so popular overall.

Verity by Colleen Hoover. I ended up hating the ending. I haven't picked up another of her books since I read that one.
