I would always prefer the books. In my opinion horror movies become scary only because of the effects. But the extra effects ruin King's stories. Reading his books have given me more nightmares and chills down my spine than ANY horror movie I've ever watched including Stephen King's own books which have been adapted into movies.

I prefer the books over movie adaptations. The movies do not follow the books and add their own effects and versions of the story which can get frustrating. However, I do admit to a little excitement if there is a scene in a movie that is exactly the way I imagined it in the book.
