The movie was amazing, but, the novel was much better. Definitely recommend it to any lover of fantasy genre.

I absolutely loved both the book and the movie and I honestly don't prefer one over the other (which is saying a lot because I always prefer the books!) I may be a little bit biased because I love anything by him though. I feel as though the movie was done in a very pretty way (as most of his films do). The sex scenes must have been subtle because I definitely don't remember anything about it happening. Just that it was a casually implied thing.

The shape of Water is probably my favourite Guillermo del Toro movies (and that's saying something because I adore that man so much), it truly encapsulates the essence of a fairytale, but for adults. It's beautifully nuanced as well, like I know everyone makes fun of the fact that she essentially slept with a fish, but think about the last time a timid and overall shy female character was portrayed as sexually liberated. And the movie is just so beautiful to watch because of the incredible cinematography. Absolutely love this movie!!

I took my time to watch the movie and honestly I didn't find it so great. I agree that it's a fairytale for adults turning what is basically a standard science fiction story like one they wrote them decades ago "shifted" to look fancy. I admit that it's a very personal reaction that comes from an old science fiction fan who sees the creature from the classic movie Creature from the Black Lagoon turned into a good "guy".

As for the sex part, it didn't disturb me. Remember that the movie starts with Eliza goint into the tub and "enjoy herself" so she's not a repressed woman, it's just that she didn't have a boyfriend and the creature becomes the love of her life. Among science fiction fans there are jokes about "physical compatibility" among different species, this case is not more absurd than many others seen in Star Trek for example.
Ciao :)

I feel the same way. Guillermo's movies are inspirational to me and I really enjoy fantasy. I even enjoyed Hellboy. I think he is a creative director, bringing a fresh breath to the movie industry. With all the remakes/remasters/origin stories/retribution etc. (you get the point), he is one director to look to bring something interesting to the screen. I enjoyed The Shape of Water. It was inspirational. Being different doesn't mean being a weirdo, and outcast, but embracing oneself and if one is happy with its persona, then the public will become more open-minded. And of course, we all are a bit weird and strange in our ways, so we should accept ourselves as we are and try to live a happy life. :P

I loved it, not necessarily the best, A couple of issues here and there, but characters, themes, and directing cinematography were great!
