When transferring a book into a movie, key parts are often left out. Now, in the good movies based on books, they only miss small parts. The problem with transferring a book to a movie is that a book can take as many pages as it wants to describe every minuscule detail. A movie costs a lot more to make than a book, plus they can't show the characters thoughts as well. But, overall, making movies from books is usually ok in my opinion.

I think books are usually better than the movies or even tv shows unless you read the book after the movie then I think the movie will make the book seem not so good like with the Vampire Diaries. I couldn't read the books after I started watching the TV show.

I usually enjoy the books more than the movies, but I can think of two cases in which it was the opposite. I actually preferred the movie The Silver Linings Playbook and the movie Dear John more than the books, but these are the only instances I can think of. I was especially disappointed with how the Harry Potter movies ended up, but I loved the first two because they stayed very true to the books.

I prefer books, unless they make an amazing movie.

Prime example of an awful onscreen adaption: Percy Jackson.

I think Catching Fire by Suzanne Collins was the best movie from a book i have seen. I actually enjoy when a book is made into a movie or even a television series. I get to visually see what i saw in my head. I also like to see what others think the characters look like.

I think it is quite all right to make movies from books. I am always interested in the script writers', film makers', directors', and actors' interpretation of the subject. I already expect the movie not to be as detailed as the book, and one cannot help but compare the movie to the book. However, instead of looking what the movie left out, I find that there is a valid interpretation that deserves consideration.

If the film adaptation can capture a similar atmosphere and cast actual talent (rather than just slap famous people's names on the promo), then I think it can be pulled off. I really hate movies that detract from the original message of the book, or make it vulgar, overly-violent, or sexualized.

Harry Potter is a good example of an an amazing book series being made into an equally amazing movie series.

I think movies more often should credit "loosely based upon the book..." But what drives me nuts is when readers pick a movie apart when a book and movie are two completely different mediums. Sometimes there is just no way to fit all of that into a two hour movie or the director had a different vision for the story. But I can respect some directors for doing their best to stay as close to the book as possible such as the first Harry Potter which led to many children picking up a book for the first time.

I think if the movie is done right it is amazing. Like how with Harry Potter they brought JK Rowling in on the process and even if they made changes it still didn't affect the plot. Where as with the Percy Jackson movies they totally ruined beyond saving and slowly and painfully reduced a fandom to tears.

I think they can turn out really well. However, I think it needs to be a really fabulous novel, first. Movies such as Twilight were pretty pathetic, as were the novels. I loved Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit. I feel like the Hunger Games movies are following pretty closely to the novels, and I enjoy that they have a strong female lead. My favorite series of books "Outlander" by Diana Gabaldon, are quite brilliant novels. I had always said they should make a tv series out of the novels. After 25 years, the series will air on Starz in June. I have been closely following the process and am super thrilled with what I have seen so far. I am anxious to see how it all comes together.

Im in the middle on this one. I've seen times when the movie is better and times when the book is. However a great example of a movie better than the book was Black Mass about Jimmy "Whitey" Bulger. BotH the movie and book where very good but I prefer the movie.
