I totally agree!! I wasn't even thinking of this series, which is odd because my daughters and I are always re-reading the books and watching the movies. For some reason the first thing that came to mind was Ian McEwan's "Atonement." I really thought that was so wonderfully done and I don't recall anything major being taken away.
