I would say that I think I love both. It's hard for me to decide with things like this sometimes, but if I had to pick, I'd go for the latter.

I've watched the TV version, but I hadn't heard of the book (or is it a series of books?) until this point in time. Certainly worth a look at, since you say they are so different.
