By far, the best book I have ever read that was made into a disaster of a movie was The Keep by F. Paul Wilson, and butchered...I mean filmed by Michael Mann. It is simply put, a disgrace from the casting and special effects through the directing and filming. It took an awesome, original story and completely robbed it of all of its heart when it was translated to the screen. So very sad indeed. Definitely, read the book and skip the movie.

There are many great books that made bad movies that we have to wonder that how excellent material can be so different in the form of movie. There are many readers have been insist to see the books they love being turned into the poor movie.

"The Queen of the Damned" by Anne Rice is definitively up there. The actors where dreadful and the director couldn't concentrate on one aspect of the book long enough, to lend it at least some profoundness.

And then there's "Timeline" by Michael Crichton. The best part of the book is what's happening with the people who didn't travel in time. But the director ignored that part for most of the film.

I've been pretty disappointed by almost all the adaptations of Dracula and the Picture of Dorian Gray.

The Percy Jackson movie was just horrible. My son and I had both really loved the book but they just butchered the story in the movie version.

I agree about Timeline and most Dracula adaptations. However, one of the most disappointing book to movie stories I've experienced was Coraline. They absolutely butchered the title character by changing her nationality and giving her a snarky attitude that did not exist in the book at all. They also made up a male character to make the film more appealing to boys (or something like that). There were many other negative changes as well, but the two I've mentioned were by far the worst.

Oh, and adaptations of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde are usually pretty bad, too.

Ugh, Percy Jackson. I was so mad at pretty much every decision made by the director in that movie.

@hpsecrets99 I totally agree that with you about Percy Jackson. The main points of the plot were changed!!!! I was sooooo mad when I saw that.

I will have to go with Queen of the Damned as well. It was simply horrible. What got me the most (other than the comments made above) was the fact that you would have no idea who some of the characters were if you did not read the book. They just showed up, without any introduction or real purpose. I hated it.

Another one is Cujo. The movie lacked so much of what made the book so appealing when I first read it. It was sometimes very painful to watch.

I have to say the Twilight Series. It wasn't the best books but an okay series considering I read it in when I was in the 8th grade. The movies were just AWFUL. Kristen Stewart ( who played Bella) made me want to gouge my eyes out from her horrible acting and shoot myself in the foot for having bought the DVD set.

Clan of the Cave Bear by Jane Auel. The Movie was just horrid. Even the author thought so.
