TV shows based on books compared to movies based on books?

Post by BEliseH »

Who watches a TV show based on a book? I watch Shadowhunters based on Cassandra Clare's Mortal Instruments book series. How do TV shows based on books compare to movies based on a book? Tell me your opinion.

I think TV shows are a better format for book adaptations than movies. There's just so much more you can do in 10 hours rather than just 2. Also, watching a TV show is more like actually reading a book because unless it's very short you don't finish it in one sitting.

There was a recent adaptation of A Series of Unfortunate Events that I may check out, and lots watch shows like Game of Thrones or the Marvel Cinematic Universe based on comics. I personally like anime that is based on manga - I find it fun and colorful.

I think it really depends on the book. "Outlander" is too long for one movie. On the other hand, I can't see something like "The Lovely Bones" being a tv series.
Life without a good book is something MrsCatInTheHat cannot imagine.

I think TV ARE better at the adaptation than films. They do not have a time limit and budget on them.

I prefer TV shows based on books because they cover all the elements of the books. Whereas, movies fail to cover all the aspects of the book.

I miss the good old days when novels were made into week long tv mini series. John Jakes' North and South and Sidney Sheldon's Rage of Angels are just a few of my favorites.
Any book that helps a child to form a habit of reading, to make reading one of his deep and continuing needs, is good for him.

I feel like its more satisfying when a tv show is made out of a book when there are 5 books or more. If there is less I prefer a movie.

I prefer a TV series because there is so much you can do. You do not have to leave out any detail. The Magicians (book) was made into an excellent series. They did however make some drastic changes to the story-line.

On the other hand, movies do work on occasion, like Harry Potter.

Sometimes, it's the best option. Look at something like Game of Thrones. It works amazingly well as a TV show and would have been horribly done as a movie. There's simply too much detail to cram into two or three hours.

I really love BBC's The Musketeers as well. Again, you're allowed more time and so you're able to expand upon characters and arcs that movies just don't allow for.

I too prefer TV series... Harry Potter series movies didn't adapt many things in novel. It left the movies a little hollow. But game of thrones was almost as good as novel since it didn't have to be crammed into two to two and a half hours

How was the series? I heard it was good but then again, it didn't get very popular, just like the movie although tis series is great

I think Tv series will work well if the plot is long and requires gradual development. The kind of slow development that won't occur efficiently in a movie. Supernatural for example, if it became a movie, it will be horrible, imagine all the things they have to cut out if each season became a movie. Also, if something is really good, having it as a series allows you to spend more time with it and get attached.

I heard about the magician series, but i never knew what it was about. People seemed to like it, can you tell me what is it about? :tiphat:

Tv shows are generally better since they are better in details than movies where a lot is removed. I would say Tv shows are much more familiar with the books than the movies

The TV show, "Justified," began as a short story by Elmore Leonard called, "Fire in the Hole." Timothy Olyphant's character, Deputy US Marshal Raylan Givens, is featured in a series of Leonard's books and aspects of those stories make their way into the television series. This was my husband's and my most favorite show ever...we continually watch it (own the DVDs) even now that it's over. Leonard and his son were both actively involved in the show, which I think helped to keep it true to the literary characters. I appreciate that Leonard was flexible with making changes, too, as he did when he chose to keep Walter Goggins' character, bad boy Boyd Crowder, as a show regular when he was originally supposed to die in the first episode (per the book's storyline). The show would not have been the same without him; he is a remarkable actor with an awesome character. I think the books were a great starting point, but the series really took the story into fantastically creative directions.

I think really good book series should be made into TV. There is more room to explore all the things about the book that normally the movie would remove as Fluff, but not moving the story along

Shadowhunters tv show was better than the movie- I couldn't get past the eyebrows claire had in the movie lol
Outlander is awesome as a tv series, they still miss a couple things, but those books are large, so you expect it all can't fit.
True blood was awesome as a tv series, would not have done as well as a movie.
