I usually don't read books by Indian authors, because they feel a little too relatable to me ( Indian ) and I prefer to read about new things and different cultures. I dont know if that made sense, but yes, I would like to try a few books by Indian authors. Any suggestions?

I am an Indian, but Indian literature is one of my favorites. You do have a point, but India is such a diverse country with hundreds, if not thousands of cultures, traditions, and heritage.

I especially love reading about the Dalit and caste system in India. Some of my favorites are "Untouchable" and "Coolie."

I also read a book about professional mourners. If you can suggest a few books that explore the culture of central India, please do.

There is a book A house for Mr Biswa talking much about Indian culture. Unfortunately the writer dwelled a bit more on the negative aspect. Especially the way he portrays Female and children characters. Otherwise it is a must read for those who like reading. The story line the flow make the book interesting

I would try The Henna Artist by Alka Joshi, it is a different genre of novel in my opinion based in old time India.
It was an entertaining read with the navigations of a woman in a time where woman found it difficult to make their presence known, it has elements of romance and fighting societal expectations but I found it to be a light and enjoyable read.

To be frank I also don't read many of Indian Authors but I recently read The Hidden Hindu Series by Akshat Gupta and it was quite an interesting read and it was very informative. I didn't know so many things about my own religion that I read about in the book and even if you are not interested in reading it as religion related book, you can just treat it as a fictional book based on Indian Mythology.

I think if theres any mentions of an indian author, not mentioning Arundathi Roy is a sin. Her books are always great. She does both fiction and non fiction. For starters id suggest The God of Small Things, which, AFAIK is her best selling book.

R.K. Narayan’s novels, and short stories are the reasons why common middle-class Indians developed an interest in English stories. Check out "Malgudi Days"
