I'm falling in love with Elizabeth Lim at the moment and I want to read more books by Asian authors. Any recommendations?

I definitely recommend Haruki Murakami, from Japan. My favorites by him are "Norwegian Wood", "1Q84" and "Kafka on the Shore".

Why does it seem as if there are so few Oriental and Hispanic/Latino, etc. writers? Other artwork from those areas is often fantastic and I have often been baffled by this. I like Amy Tan but I haven't heard of many other Asian writers. Is it a cultural thing, I wonder. A religious issue? Political?

Min Jin Lee has a really great novel out, Pachinko, and I wouldn't hesitate to recommend R.F. Kuang's The Poppy War too!

It is certainly a cultural thing, because Western writers have been in the forefront for ages, given Western centrism today. I would recommend Ocean Vuong, Banana Yoshimoto, Shirley Geok-lin Lim, Arundhati Roy, etc. I hope you enjoy them.

Front Desk by Kelly Yang
It's about a girl who immigrated to the USA together with her parents.
They thought living in a new country was easy.
Despite her age and limited English vocabulary, Mia worked in a hotel as a front desk manager to help her parents.
Over time, she pursued learning the language and made some friends at school.
It's a great read for first generation expats.

Have you read "The Vegetarian" by Han Kang? It's about a woman who suddenly decided to stop eating.

Liu Cixin is a wonderful science fiction author from China. I think his work compares favorably with many Western sci-fi classics.

I also recently read a memior by Libo Xao Meyers called, Limp Forward - A Memoir of Disability, Perseverance, and Success. It was a great memior, and she was from China. It was a tearjerker.

I would recommend American Chinese writer Amy Tan. Some of her best-selling books are "The Joy Luck Club" published in 1989 and "The Kitchen God' s Wife," published in 1991.
