I love reading books about other cultures or ones that have been translated. I live in the U.S.A., does anyone have any recommendations?

If you never read Things Fall Apart by Chinua Achebe in high school, it's definitely worth a read. Pearl S Buck's The House of Earth trilogy is good too. Unless you're looking for non fiction? I think you may want to clarify.

House of Spirits by Isabel Allende. This was definitely my favorite book I read last year. It takes place in an unspecified South American country, but it is written by the daughter of Salvador Allende who was the democratically elected leader of Chile before he was overthrown in a US-sponsored military coup, so it seems to be very much inspired by real-life events. The main characters of the book are women which was definitely appealing to me, and I think it introduced me to the genre of "magic realism" where it's realistic enough but there are some magical elements.
