If I like David Simon's: homicide year on the killing street

I just finished David Simon's homicide year on the killing streets and loved his style of gritty writing, no hokeyness whatsoever. What are some other police procedural /detective novels with the dark gritty tone. I can't stand the mass produced far fetched hokeyness of the mainstream murder mystery authors.
