Working From Home: Making It Work for You is written by Thomas Engblom, Ph.D.

The author begins this book by speaking about working from home and how it is not a new concept. One thing that made working from home a main topic for everyone was the COVID-19 pandemic. The realization that the mandate to stay at home for two weeks would become months and months made working from home the only option for many companies. The employees benefited by the decision to work from home because it kept their jobs and incomes intact. The employees just needed to adapt a little and pick a quiet spot in their homes in which to set up their offices.

The idea of having a quiet place to concentrate and work from home may seem like an easy task. It could be an easy task if we weren't human. We have families that weren't used to us working from home, and they would often pop in the workspace to ask questions or wonder what we were doing. While these pop-ins were plentiful at first, the employees had to set some boundaries and let their families know that even though they were physically at home, it didn't mean they were available.

Some companies used a hybrid way of working from home. The employees would work at home the majority of the time but would sometimes be called into the office to work. This didn't happen often, as the companies still had to use the safety of six feet of distance, but it was a good way to slowly get the employees used to working from home.

While our families could be a distraction, simply being at home can be a distraction as well. When one is home all day, they can begin to think, "I'll just put in one load of laundry," or "I'll get dinner started early," or "I'll tidy up the living room." When you work at home, these are big distractions. You must get control of yourself and have a mindset that you are at work in the office, and you must ignore those feelings of doing domestic chores.

The author goes through all of the things that make working from home a positive. He cites many studies about working from home. I found the author's insights about working from home to be very useful. Even now with the pandemic over, many people still prefer to work at home. If you are one of these people but currently don't work for a company that offers remote work, the author lists the top one hundred companies that offer remote work. You would simply evaluate yourself and your skills and then pick out the best company for you and apply.

Overall, I found this book very helpful. I am a big fan of working from home and did so before the pandemic, during the pandemic, and after it. I worked for UnitedHealthcare for eight years and found them very accommodating. Keep in mind I live alone and have a spare bedroom that I use for my office.

This book was flawlessly edited with no typos or grammar issues. I also find that I would not change anything about the way the book was written. Every time the author gave a point, he also gave a reference to which study the point was made. It is for these reasons that I give this book a 4 out of 5 stars. If you are considering working from home at any level, this book is for you.
