[Following is a volunteer review of "Inspiring Book of Poems, Dreams, and Stories" by Lisa McCarthy.]
Inspiring Book of Poems, Dreams, and Stories by Lisa McCarthy is, as the name suggests, a collection of faith-based poems, dreams, and stories with a nature theme. Despite the short length of the book, I felt it imparted a strong message. The author wrote this in hopes that it would inspire readers to never give up, be free, and enjoy life, all while enjoying a close relationship with God. The organisation of the book was good; a table of contents is included, and the order of the poems, dreams, and stories also makes sense.
This book is good for Christians. The author’s tone is kind, compassionate, and encouraging. The message is Biblical, with the author consistently exalting God. Bible verses are included where they strengthen the message. One unique thing I loved about the book is how the author relates nature and the natural world to God. The birds, rainstorms, and the seasons are all evidence of God’s glory. It helps the reader draw the connection from the beautiful and amazing nature of God’s other creations to the beautiful and amazing nature of humans themselves. The diversity of humans, both in personality and in appearance, is part of what makes us so beautiful. I can really see how the author was inspired by nature and God’s grace. I also found some of the poems very moving; “Dew From The Maker Above” was a particularly beautiful one.
Now, I will go to the things I did not like. The editing and formatting of the book’s sentences weren’t good. Many sentences read like run-ons, even if they weren’t. There were also many actual run-ons. I would also suggest that the author capitalise pronouns when the antecedent is God, as that is the norm. Additionally, while I wouldn’t describe this as a dislike, I didn’t understand all the author’s dreams. Maybe that is specific to me.
I think this book will be relatable to all Christians, especially when it comes to the struggles of life. This book gets a 3 out of 5 from me; it lost points for its editing and formatting.
