Opaque, written by Calix Leigh-Reign, made for a very engaging and fun read. Leigh-Reign does an excellent job of exploring this power system and sort of secret world they’ve created. While reading it, I was always curious to learn more as the mystery of Adam and Carly’s true nature was unveiled piece by piece. Leigh-Reign also uses very descriptive language, which I enjoyed. It paints very clear pictures while evoking the feelings of the characters. There are some decent twists sprinkled throughout, as well. It was fun to have images of text messages and other documents inserted in, too.

However, there were still some aspects that could’ve been done better. Adam’s feelings for his mom, for instance, was very difficult to read through. It does get explained later, but it was still very uncomfortable to witness, and I would understand if some people stopped upon first reading that. There were also a few other plot points I found sort of unnecessary and others that seemed to be brushed aside too quickly. The pacing of the fight scenes also felt a little off. They were less descriptive than other parts of the book and felt more like things being listed.

In general, I also didn’t find Adam very likeable. This didn’t really take away from my enjoyment of the book, though, and he did get good character development. I think he and Carly are both pretty well written. On the other hand, some of the less prevalent characters do suffer in the personality department. There is also a bit of text written in Russian. Some of it gets translated by a character, other bits do not.

While there are some aspects that could be improved upon, I still enjoyed the book overall. It’s well edited, has an interesting plot, and makes me very curious to explore the series further. I’ll probably read the sequels sometime soon. I would give this book a 4/5.
