Exploring Wine Regions: Bordeaux, France is a lovely travel guide by Michael C. Higgins, PhD, that explores the history, major tourist sites, food culture, and wine cultivation in the region of Bordeaux, France. This deep dive into local wineries and their terroirs feels like being on a wine tour! As an avid traveler, I enjoyed reading about experiences throughout the region that might slip by the average tourist. As a wine lover, it was fun to learn the history of wine cultivation in Bordeaux and to gain insight into local wine experiences. I will surely keep the author’s recommendations in mind if I venture to Bordeaux in the future.

The author’s passion for wine and travel, as well as their vast experience in both industries, is apparent in the book. I particularly enjoyed the photography that is showcased in each section, allowing the reader to visualize each experience outlined by the author. The book is very atmospheric, and I could easily picture myself in the restaurants and wineries mentioned throughout.

This travel guide was quite accessible and easy to understand. It’s in-depth enough to keep an experienced traveler interested, but it remains palatable to a beginner traveler with easy explanations of the history and geography of the region. Moreover, the discussion of wine doesn’t come off as snobby or high-brow, which I appreciated. Even someone who isn’t intimately acquainted with the wine industry can appreciate this book. In fact, the author has deliberately chosen to showcase wineries that are open to the public!

The descriptions of the wines are rich and luscious. I wished for a glass of wine and a paired cheese board as I read through them. The beautiful castles and gardens in the photos are unfortunately out of my reach for the moment.

I did find one typo, but admittedly it may have been a stylistic choice due to the formatting. I would recommend some formatting changes if the author chooses to sell this as an ebook. The format would work well for a physical book, but in an ebook format, it can be difficult to read the small print and follow the order of the sections. That said, I have no real critiques of the writing itself. The book very much feels like a friendly tour guide who is passionate about Bordeaux has taken you around to point out the sights.

This book earns a 4 out of 5 stars. The only major issue is the formatting for ebook readers. The remaining four stars are easily earned for the extensive information provided about Bordeaux’s wines and the excellent recommendations.
