Review of Keys to Harmony

[Following is a volunteer review of "Keys to Harmony" by Margalit Jakob.]
Margalit Jakob, in her memoir titled “Keys to Harmony," explores the grim journey that she has to go through as she battles with depression, the toll it takes on the things she loves, the pains, and the unyielding but continuous effort she has to put into her healing. All of these are beautifully expressed in this book. How do you express your love for something when practicing it brings so much pain and hurt?
When I first read the title of this book, “Keys to Harmony,” I was expecting to read within the pages a series of motivations that give clarity and clichés about overcoming depression. I never expected to read a full autobiography about the harrowing journey it takes to fight depression at a time when depression isn’t widely spoken about or acknowledged. One beautiful thing that changed my perspective and stood with me as I read this book is Margalit's acceptance and full understanding of her situation; she knew she was depressed, and even despite how hard and misunderstood people are, she still pivoted forward, and she still sought all the help she could get, and that speaks to me in a lot of different dimensions.
I love practically everything about this autobiographical book. To begin with, I love the author's mode of narration and telling her story; this carries the reader along with a great sense of time and place. The author put great effort into following a wonderful progression of life in her storytelling, and I love that so much. I also love that she does not exaggerate nor tone down the situation, and this allows the emotions to be beautifully conveyed to readers.
Her writing style and choice of words convey her vulnerability in a sincere and clear form. She has a high level of self-awareness, and even if she battles with depression at different phases of her life, I believe her self-awareness and understanding of her mental health made healing more comfortable, because I won’t call her healing easy; no journey of healing is easy.
There is nothing I could call a dislike; the author uses the right words to convey her story and emotions. I was fully engrossed in the book and how her effort paved the way for her healing.
This book is professionally edited; I didn't come across an error while reading. I'll give it a 5 out of 5 stars rating due to the exceptional way Margalit was able to showcase the day-to-day effects depression has on people battling it. This work goes beyond courage; it is filled with sincerity and authenticity.
I highly recommend this book to artists who are struggling to connect with the art and craft they truly love, and also to anyone who is conflicted between what they love and the ideas the world is pushing on them.
