Review of Crimeline Hollywood

[Following is a volunteer review of "Crimeline Hollywood" by Thomas Collins.]
In Crimeline Hollywood we meet Dash, Hollywood’s top astrologer, and he is on the run from an unhappy client's hit man. Trying to lie low, he decides to go across the country to North Carolina, where his most famous client, Sparklynn, grew up. He starts to feel that he could stay away from Hollywood forever, and then Sparklynn goes missing right as her new movie releases. Her family begs for his help in finding her before it’s too late. Sparklynn’s family asks him to work with an internet celebrity private investigator, Rebecca, and she does not want Dash to get in her way. They disagree at every turn, the FBI doesn’t take any possible leads they say seriously, and the list of people they can trust keeps getting shorter. Who would want to take Sparklynn, and why? Can they find Sparklynn? You’ll have to read to find out!
I really enjoyed this book! It balanced the mystery and suspense of this story with well-timed comic relief and lighter moments. I don't mean to say there are no mystery or thriller aspects, but you're not going to have nightmares about it. I loved the banter between Dash and Rebecca. It was witty and authentic. All the characters felt real and believable as well, even the smaller ones. Dash was an excellent narrator, and the book was well paced.
There is very little to complain about in this book; it was engaging and exciting. That said, Dash's time in North Carolina took up a large part of the first act and never really came back around as meaningful in the end. While I enjoyed those parts, looking back at the whole story now, they don't quite make sense. With that in mind, I give this book a 4 out of 5. This book may be better suited for 13+, as there's adult language and some descriptive scenes of violence.
