Marrissa, the giraffe, was eventually accepted by the other animals in the farm. But first, she experienced a little bit of indifference. How do you overcome indifference?

I just continue to be myself. If people like me, that's great. If not, it's their loss not mine.

I treat people the way they treat me. If people act like I don't exist or matter, I show them the same attitude.

This is a tricky question, I think it depends entirely on the circumstances. For the giraffe in the book, she started to cry at the other animals teasing, and they began to relate to her. But crying would not be appropriate in many real-life situations!

I think that this is both the right, and at the same time, the wrong answer. It is the right answer as it is the ideal one where a confident, outgoing, non-affected person would be the target. In this situation just being able to brush off-handed comments away is definitely idea. Unfortunately, everyone is not so confident to be able to do this.

I feel this would be me, too. Being who I am, I most likely would not make the extra effort if no one else is. This may not be the most ideal way to handle the situation, but I think my shyness would just take over.

I don't try hard to be liked and I don't invest my time and the effort for people to like me. I'm experienced enough to be able to figure out people and can say immediately which kind likes me, and which doesn't, so I act accordingly.

I agree! Although there are some times when I know the other person has had a bad day or something is frustrating them. At those times, I try to be a little more understanding and kind even though I don't feel like I'm being treated fairly.

Fake it till you make it.
Eventually it'll come automatically.

It largely depends on the context and the situation. It is possible that indifference is the default response of a group on meeting someone new, or that their indifference is based on factors external to my behavior. In that case, I would be perfectly alright with it, and just like Marrissa, I would be reasonably confident of it wearing of eventually. If it is explicitly directed towards me, then I would probably react in kind.

I haven't had many situations in which I experience indifference. I think how I react depends on my mood that day. I've sometimes just turned a blind eye to the situation, while other times, I just try to bring up a topic that is exciting so people feel motivated to say an opinion about it. Other times, I just try to be funny, but not crazy funny.

I can relate to this much. It's hard to change the minds of a group of people, especially if I'm just by myself. But if those people are worth it, then I should try harder.

I would embrace those that accept me and stay away from those that treat me with indifference - heck, if that's everybody then I'm a loner! Haha.
