The ARA Review Exchange is a system in which authors review other authors' books, generlaly in exchange for getting their own book reviews by other authors. However, the person who reviews a author's book is not the same person whose book that author reviewed. This way, author reviews do not influence each other, such as by an author being inclined to reward a good review by deliving one in return or deliver a negative review as revenge.

Songs from the Other Side by Robyn Bernstein is a poignant exploration of grief, love, and the quest for understanding. The narrative follows fifteen-year-old Jayne as she grapples with the loss of her father and the subsequent upheaval of her life. Bernstein's writing is both tender and insightful, offering a window into the tumultuous world of a young girl seeking solace in the midst of chaos.

The book opens with Jayne discovering her late father's science journal, which becomes a source of comfort and guidance. The journal's entries, filled with private lectures and handwritten theories, eerily reflect Jayne's own struggles as she navigates her new reality. This element of the story is particularly compelling, as it blurs the lines between past and present, between Jayne's inner world and the external forces shaping her journey.

As Jayne moves to a new home and takes on the role of caretaker for her younger cousin, she encounters Jonah, a fellow science enthusiast and musician. Their relationship blossoms amidst the backdrop of Jayne's grief, offering moments of lightness and hope. Bernstein skillfully portrays the complexities of human connections, particularly how they can both anchor us and set us adrift.

The characters in Songs from the Other Side are vividly drawn, each with their own quirks and idiosyncrasies that add depth to the narrative. Jayne's voice is authentic and relatable, making her journey all the more engaging. The supporting cast, including Jonah and Jayne's cousin, provide a rich tapestry of interactions that further enrich the story.

Bernstein's prose is lyrical and evocative, with a rhythm that mirrors the musical themes woven throughout the book. The use of music as both a metaphor and a literal element of the plot adds a layer of complexity to the narrative, highlighting the ways in which art can reflect and influence our lives.

In terms of rating, I would give Songs from the Other Side a 4 out of 5 stars The book's strengths lie in its character development and emotional resonance. However, there are moments where the pacing falters slightly, and certain plot points feel underdeveloped. Despite these minor shortcomings, the novel is a deeply moving and beautifully crafted piece of literature.

Overall, Songs from the Other Side is a testament to the enduring power of love and the resilience of the human spirit. It is a story that will resonate with anyone who has experienced loss and the subsequent journey towards healing and hope.
