ARA Review by Chaotic_Reading of Promise. (A Book of Death)

The ARA Review Exchange is a system in which authors review other authors' books, generlaly in exchange for getting their own book reviews by other authors. However, the person who reviews a author's book is not the same person whose book that author reviewed. This way, author reviews do not influence each other, such as by an author being inclined to reward a good review by deliving one in return or deliver a negative review as revenge.

A man dies, then is plunged into a fantasy world where he has to work with Death. As we follow our main character, we learn of their powers and abilities, strengths and weaknesses, as well as who they really are.

This book has a solid plot as well as a fun idea to explore, but it could use some work. I felt like this was more of a first draft than a final product. There were a lot of easily fixable grammatical mistakes, plus some misuse of words such as using “perry” instead of “parry” when describing a sword fight. The random errors, capital letters, and other small errors really added up by the end of this book. Two things specifically were that sometimes Death was capitalized when referring to the character, and other times, it was not. There was the section where he spoke about “king Arthur” and a moment later mentioned “the King.” Just easily correctable mistakes.

I was able to follow along rather easily, and was enjoying myself, up until the part of the book where our main character was able to hold, gather, and then return the power of several bombs. I understood that they were supposed to be strong, stronger than Death, but that really pulled me out of the story, and I couldn’t really get back into it beyond that point. I knew as soon as the main character started watching the man at the end that they were watching themselves, and I just had a feeling that our main character was Death all along, just from different points in their afterlife. I was a tad disappointed honestly, and the fact that Death seemed weaker than our main character despite being the same person, was a bit weird.

The concept of time being a constantly moving thing that one is able to move in and out of was actually pretty cool. I loved how our character was able to go to different points in time to either talk to people, or gather information that they needed, in order to continue down their path. The different places that our main character goes are vast and interesting. From visiting ancient Egypt to King Arthur to the Garden of Eden, our character moves through time and space. I was really intrigued by the different places the author chose to add to the story, and I was hoping for more of an explanation than given.

I gave this story 3 out of 5 stars because of the grammatical errors, as well as the abrupt ending. It was rather jarring, and left me with no sort of closure to the overall story.
