ARA Review by Sarah Russell 4 of Herai

The ARA Review Exchange is a system in which authors review other authors' books, generlaly in exchange for getting their own book reviews by other authors. However, the person who reviews a author's book is not the same person whose book that author reviewed. This way, author reviews do not influence each other, such as by an author being inclined to reward a good review by deliving one in return or deliver a negative review as revenge.

Herai by Aaron D. Key is a beautifully woven tale of two intertwined timelines, both revolving around a pivotal life that alters the destiny of Monta, a key figure in the story. Set in the city of Glant, the novel explores a society where safety is maintained at the cost of personal freedom. Glant’s youngest and most innocent child, Herai, becomes an unwitting player in the rising opposition against the city’s strict rule.

As tensions grow, Glant’s survival hangs in the balance. The city teeters on the edge of a war that no one wants but may be impossible to avoid. Herai's journey through the political intrigue and danger that surrounds Glant serves as a key element of the story. Will the city survive? Will Herai make it through the growing threats that encircle her?

Parallel to this narrative is Monta's own deeply personal journey. Monta is a character searching for love and meaning in a world gripped by uncertainty and strife. His quest for emotional fulfillment and understanding is set against the larger backdrop of war and survival, offering readers a glimpse into both the personal and political stakes of the story.

Aaron D. Key deftly navigates the themes of war, sacrifice, and the human desire for peace and freedom. The storytelling is rich, with deeply nuanced characters and a thoughtful exploration of the costs of security, the inevitability of conflict, and the importance of finding meaning amidst chaos. The dual timelines provide an engaging structure that keeps the reader invested in both the personal and broader political stakes.

Herai is a compelling read for anyone who enjoys stories about love, conflict, and the difficult balance between survival and freedom
4 out of 5 because well the story is well written the story at times can be hard to follow and isn't a story that everyone will understand falling more in line with older readers.
