ARA Review by D. H. Morris of One Bone at a Time

The ARA Review Exchange is a system in which authors review other authors' books, generlaly in exchange for getting their own book reviews by other authors. However, the person who reviews a author's book is not the same person whose book that author reviewed. This way, author reviews do not influence each other, such as by an author being inclined to reward a good review by deliving one in return or deliver a negative review as revenge.

One Bone at a Time: Tales of an Adventurous Animal Chiropractor by Alison Seely is the heartwarming memoir of a Canadian veterinary who specializes in chiropractic care and achieves remarkable success in seemingly hopeless cases. Seely’s account of her life and her career is an eye-opening account into the under-reported specialty of animal chiropractic therapy.

As a child, Seely is in love with animals – especially horses, but plagued by a serious complication. She is allergic to most animals! Her determination to become a vet in spite of this and other challenges sets the tone for the book as time and again she demonstrates her fearless nature and strong determination to achieve her goals.

Seely is also an avid sports enthusiast with many marathons and iron man events to her credit. Her triumphs and tragedies in this pursuit are interspersed throughout the book, adding nuance and additional perspective to her already fascinating life. Full of interesting characters (both human and animal) and fun stories, this memoir is an easy and engaging read for both animal lovers and sports enthusiasts alike.

I have two minor complaints about the book. One is that there was too much distance between some of the people she introduced in earlier chapters and when she mentioned them later in the book. When I read their names in the final few chapters, I found that I had forgotten who they were. A brief reminder of their importance in her life would have helped tremendously. The other complaint (also minor) is that Seely used some medical terms that I was not familiar with. She did define “subluxation” after the third time she used it. I would have preferred that explanation after the first use.

I gave One Bone at a Time: Tales of an Adventurous Animal Chiropractor 5 out of 5 stars. It is a great read reminiscent of James Herriot’s “All Creatures Great and Small” series with one caveat. It does contain some language that may be offensive to some readers.
